dysblaxia™ noun \ dis-ˈblak-sē-ə

Dysblaxia™ isn’t new. We just didn’t have a word for it before.

But, everyone has experienced it.  Remember when your 5th grade teacher kept mixing you up with your classmate, even though he was six inches taller and two shades darker. Or when the traffic cop asked how you could afford such an expensive car. Or when your neighbour hurriedly closed the building door behind her because she thought that she was being followed.  And, we are not even going to get started on that Karen in the park.

The point is that the inability to distinguish one black individual from another is both an old problem and a current reality. When it is not simply annoying or deadly serious, dysblaxia™ really is quite laughable.

We choose to laugh.

And, to enlighten.

There is a story behind every statement on every piece of clothing that we produce.  We didn’t choose the statements by chance.  They represent our lived experience, our shared story.  So, when someone asks you about dysblaxia™, share your story.  Have that conversation.  Let them know that it’s okay to laugh in the face of ignorance.  We do. And, so should you.
